Childhood obesity, body mass index (BMI), clinical global impression scale (CGI), lisdexanfetamine (LDX)Abstract
Objective: To screen patients under 18 years of age with obesity (Body Mass Index >30 kgr/m2 or PC>97) treated at an Eating Disorders Unit (UTCA) from 2015 to 2020. Material and Methods: descriptive cross-sectional study of 22 patients recruited after their first visit for obesity, with evolutionary follow-up, assessed by means of Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI) at the beginning and at the end and analysis of the clinical symptomatic, weight and body mass index (BMI) evolution at 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48 months. Result and discussion: Throughout the study, a small percentage of the patients seen in the UTCA were due to obesity. Of the patients included, 54,54% were women. A multifactorial treatment was implemented in these patients, based on a Mediterranean diet, physical exercise, psychotherapy and drugs. Of the latter, lisdexanfetamine (LDX) stands out, as it was the most prescribed drug. At the beginning of therapy many patients experienced a decrease in their BMI and some even increased it. At the end of the follow-up period most of them evolved to overweight or normal weight, being at higher degrees of obesity at the beginning. Significant medical and psychiatric comorbidities were found. Digestive and endocrine system disorders, Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and binge eating disorder were the most important ones. Conclusions: Most patients have had an overall improvement of symptoms after the follow-up period in the Unit. Treatment strategies appear to be effective and suggest a continuation of this line of work.
