We present a 14-year-old girl recently diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus. Individual and family intervention supporting grief are described. Patient and family go through different phases of grief, illustrated by different pieces from the sessions. This highlights the importance of emotional validation and emotional expression, specially negative emotions. Although this case is about systemic lupus erythematosus, the process itself could be generalized to any chronic disease diagnosed during childhood or adolescence.
