Abstract

The clinical picture of school phobia, aetio­logy, prevalence, psychological mechanisms and treatment are revised. School refusal has historically been understood as primerely a consequence of separation anxiety, depression appears as a common factor in older school refusers thought. Criteria for a clear differen­tial diagnosis between truancy and school pho­bia are described.
