Abstract

Having experienced trauma during childhood triples the risk of suffering a serious mental disorder in adulthood and suggests that a comprehensive approach to patients is needed that not only takes into account physical factors, but also their personal history. This article points out the need to incorporate the perspective of trauma in public health transversally, across all stages of development, as well as in preventive health policies that prioritize investment in mental health. It also highlights the importance of reflecting on the complexity of calculating the direct and indirect global costs of psychological trauma within different sectors, including healthcare, education, social area and justice.
