Abstract

Adolescents with severe mental disorders often have significant difficulties in achieving awareness of their body sensations, emotions and thoughts, which is associated with poor skills in emotional regulation. Objective: This study aims to analyze the effects of yoga on mindfulness skills in adolescents with severe mental health conditions who are attending a day hospital. Material and methods: The sample comprised eight adolescents from 12 to 16 years of age. The patients went to the Tibet House of Barcelona to receive yoga sessions for 14 weeks. The Mindful Attention Awareness Scale-Adolescents (MAAS-A) and the Child and Adolescent Mindfulness Measure (CAMM) were used before and after the program. Results: At the end of the intervention, adolescents scored higher on mindfulness measures. Conclusions: Yoga may improve mindfulness skills in adolescents with mental disorders who due to their severity and functional interference are treated in a day hospital.
