Abstract

The bonding system of attachment is fundamental in understanding the relationships between different individuals of a species as well as the relationship of mothers with their progeny. The attachment system has an evolutionary component across different species and an intergenerational transmission pattern.

In the following review, a framework is developed to understand this attachment system from both an evolutionary and neurobiological perspective. Reviewing attachment in different species has allowed us to know the underlying biological substrate and its correspondence with humans neurobiology, as well as its implication in the response to stress and the evolutionary similarities and differences of attachment relationships in different mammalian species.
