Abstract

The conceptualization of attachment and the theoretical explanation that supports it has been an enormous contribution to the understanding of human development, thus occupying a prominent place in the history of psychology.

Human beings create emotional bonds that facilitate the development and maintenance of what we call mental representations (of ourselves and of others -internal operating models-), thus helping us to understand the world and react appropriately, to predict and understand the events, to initiate and maintain behaviors that favor survival (such as maintaining bonds) and to feel safe.

In this chapter we try to address how this theory arose and has evolved, what types of attachment exist and the bases of internal operating models, main foundation for understanding the importance of attachment, are exposed.
