Abstract

There are many studies that have demonstrated a higher risk of psychiatric disorder among adopted

children. In addition, it's generally known the difficulties that adolescents adoptees have to get social and vocational success. Our study was designed to test the percentage of child psychiatric care demand of children adoptees and their social prognosis. A sample of 15 children and adolescents adoptees, separated at birth from their biological parets, were attended in our Child Psychiatric Departament between 1988 ad 1994 (0.2% of all the patients seen in this period of time). Their prevalent psychiatric diagnosis was conduct Disorder with six patients (10%). Their academic outcomes were poor with a percentage more than 70% of patients that showed evidence of school failure. The results suggest a special predisposition to suffer Conduct Disorders and School Failure on the part of the adolescents adoptees, and therefore a prediction of higher risk to the social failure for them.
