Abstract

Abusive use of alcohol has been considered by man y researchers as a risk f actor for suicida! behaviour in youth and adolescence. We study alcohol consumption in a sample ofadolescents and young adults who have made a suicide attempt comparing it with a matched control group. Tbe results revea! the existence qf' a statistically sign(ficant dif./erence between suicida! and control samples only in the case of young adult individuals. A clear re!ationsh1p between alcohol abuse and suicide attempt can be shown only in the group of young adult males. However, a heavy consumption ofalcohol in the group ofyoung adult males from the control sample can also be highlighted. Findings are discussed with rejerences to the international literature on the subject. Finally a peculiar use qf' alcohol in the young adult males of our samples is emphasized.
