Ilegal drug use and demographic variables in the adolescence. A community survey in Galicia

Following the methodology of cross-sectional surveys, the authors try to investigate consumption patterns of drug use, and to assess correlations with social and demographic variables in a community sample uf 2,282 adolescents from Galicia (Spain) aged 12 to 17 years old. Data is processed by using the Statistical Pacage SPSS/Mac in its 4.0 version. Main results of this study suggest the following: 1. Pattem of ilegal drng use by Galician adolescents is occasional in 21.5% and habitual or frequent in 4.1%. 2. 2. Cannabis derivates are the substances more frecuently used by the adolescents. 3. 40% of drug-takers use more than one drug at the same time. 4. Drug use is significantly associated to: male gender, older age subgroup, urban areas, workers and unemployers, and lower subjetive social class.
