Abstract

Introduction: In March 2020, as a consequence of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, a lockdown of at least 6 weeks was set for all residents in Spain. This was a major event for everyone, especially for children and adolescents, and their families. Aim of the study: To study parents’ experience of their children during the lockdown in Spain, in clinical and general population. Methods: We developed an ad hoc questionnaire, with sociodemographic and clinical variables. We also asked to complete the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), parents’ version. Questionnaires were sent by email to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) patients, as well as shared in social media. Results: 243 parents completed the questionnaire. 17.7% parents were “risk” workers (health workers or nursing home workers). 79% of the sample lived in the region of Madrid. In general, parents’ perceptions of their children were better than expected. 241 parents completed the SDQ. Comparisons according to risk factors showed that being a risk worker, living in Madrid or having a mental health history were risk factors to score higher in the SDQ. Conclusions: Being a risk worker, place of residency and mental health history increased SDQ scores. Long term studies are needed to further study the consequences of the lockdown in children, adolescents and their families.
