Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been widespread concern about its potential impact on the mental health of children and adolescents. In this study we have analyzed the presence of anxiety and depression symptoms in a sample of 100 children and adolescents in treatment in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit and 93 healthy volunteers during the first year since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. We were also interested in determining whether age or sex could act as risk factors for the development of these symptoms in both groups. Our results suggest that adolescent female with a history of mental disorders as the subjects most vulnerable to developing anxious-depressive symptoms in a health crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and therefore, they should be taken into account in detection, prevention and early intervention programs.
