Abstract

Use of Topiramate as an effective alternative in treating adolescents with Bipolar Disorder. A case report. Bipolar disorder with its onset in childhood or early adolescence generally takes the form of a chronic disorder. Diagnosis is complicated by the high rate of comorbidity with TDAH, disruptive behaviour disorders and substance abuse disorders. As a result of all the above, this group of patients has a worse prognosis for this illness. In comparison with adults with bipolar disorder, children and adolescents with the illness are more prone to rapid cycles or mixed states, for which anticonvulsants may be more effective than treatment with lithium. There exist studies which support the effectiveness of topiramate in bipolar disorder in adolescence. We present the clinical case of a one female adolescent diagnosed with type I bipolar disorder, whose condition stabilized following the addition of topiramate to her habitual treatment.
