Resumen
La aplicación sistemática de la investigación epidemiológica a la psicopatología infantil no comienza hasta los años sesenta (Schmidt y Remschmidt, 1982). Con anterioridad a 1960 los estudiosos de la epidemiología psiquiátrica se habían limitado a la patología del adulto, y dentro de ella se habían restringido especialmente a los aspectos asistenciales (Baasher, 1980). La principal fuente de información para este tipo de estudios procedía de las estadísticas de los hospitales psiquiátricos. Los estudios se centraban en las formas severas de enfermedad mental en los adultos.
