Abstract

Introduction: the implementation of a new mental health priority care program for child and adolescent population at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona is presented. This program arises after the increase of underage patients who have required a consultation in the emergency psychiatric services or to be hospitalised in a psychiatric ward. The mains goals are to perform an early assistance of these minors helping them stabilize and avoid hospital admission. Methods: patients attended in the first 6 months are included (between September 13th 2021 and March 13th 2022). Results: 124 patients were attended, 44 were referred for hospitalization and 80 were referred after been attended in the emergency department. 378 visits and 402 meetings with other services were carried out (schools, social services, other health services). It took an average of 1,5 working days to make the first appointment. Most patients had suicide thoughts (54%). 59,6% of the attended patients were assisted by city social services. Hospital admission was avoided in 58.3% of patients. Conclusions: This program is shown to be a useful and effective response to help underage patients in an acute psychopathological destabilization. Social risk factors were present in most patients, so a multidisciplinary approach is required. Thanks to a close collaboration with the community network, an outpatient treatment was possible in most of the minors attended.
