Abstract

This work describes a program of behavioral internention used with an institutionalised girl of nine years of age who showed multiple self-injurious behaviours. The multimodal treatment was developed during eleven weeks and through two different stages according to the techniques used. In thefirst stage, differential reinforcement of altemative behuviurs and interruption of self-injurious behaviour was used, and in the second stage, time-out was used. The results show optimistic changes in the treated behavior as well as other non-programmed behavioral effects. The behaviors of autonomy and independence and the social contacts with adults increased. The results obtained during the follow-up period show that the benefits of the treatment are maintained.
