Abstract

In the last decade a significative increase in female alcoholism has emerged, together with an earlier onset ofthe disease. However, high risk studies directed to the identification of genetic markers in children of alcoholics hardly include women as sample. This is because researchers generally accepted the results of the first studies on genetic epidemiology and Cloninger's classification of alcoholism, which give less importance to genetic factors in the development of female alcoholism. However, our review of the most recent studies points to the presence of similarities between both sexes with respect to neuropsychologtcal and psychophysiological factors of vulnerability for the development of the disease. Therefore, fema/e samples sbould not be excluded from the studies dtrected to the identification of rlsk markers of alcoholism.
