Abstract

Constipation is a common disease whose etiology in children, after the neonatal period, is psychological usually. We report the case of a 7-years-old boy studied for chronic constipation and a suspected Hirschsprung disease, who was referred by the pediatrician to Mental Health services because of his obsessive thoughts. Clinical evaluation showed a parallelism between the two disorders, guessing a common origin. A great improvement in his psychopathology arose with psychotherapy and pharmacological treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and the constipation disappeared. In pediatric population, many physical symptoms may have a psychological bias. Indeed it is necessary to carry out a deep exploration to clarify the diagnosis and perform an appropriate treatment.
