Abstract

According to the definition of the APA, selective (or elective) mutism is a childhood disorder characterized by a persistent rejection or inability to speak in one or more social situations, despite preserving, on other occasions, the ability to speak and understand spoken language. Most frequently, mutist children stop speaking at school or in the presence of adults who are not members of the family and retain their speech in the presence of relatives, although there are cases in which these characteristics are not met.
