Abstract

The children of parents with psychiatric disorders are at increased risk of developing emotional and behavioural problems. This is an issue of special concern for child psychiatrists. The link between parental psychiatric disorders and children psychopathology is sought in various mechanisms: genetic transmission, environmental influence and changes in the family interaction with
increase conflict between family members. The negative perception of the child as a consequence of parental disorder has a huge impact on children emotional development and behaviour.
This article reviews the impact of parental schizophrenia, depression and antisocial personality disorder on children. Parental psychiatric illness is associated with more psychopathology of children and poor outcome. Disorders severity, age, sex and temperament of the child, and parent personality are the more important risk factors for psychopathology.
