Mutism was first described 100 years ago as "Voluntary aphasia." It was in the 30s when it received the name with which it is currently called. Elective mutism consists of a speech pattern in which the child exclusively selects certain specific situations or certain people to talk to; despite the fact that their verbal behavior, when they speak, is appropriate to their chronological age.
