Abstract

The advent of the selective recaptative inhibitors (SSR/s) has been a major advance in psychiatry as it seems that they do have fewer side effects, lower toxicity in overdose and a potentially broader range of clinical indications, The goal of this article is to review the safety and side effects of the use of SSR/s in children and adolescents. The conclusions are that as in adults, also in children and adolescents SSR/s are potentially useful in treating a variety of psychiatric disorders, specially anxiety disorders, depressive disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Available data suggest that the safety of these medications is good in the short time, but further research is essential to provide the necessary information on the efficacy, safety on the long time, and pharmacokinetics.
