Abstract

This study presents the design and results of an autism spectrum disorder early detection programme devised by the childhood/adolescent mental health unit of Reina Sofía Hospital in Cordoba in collaboration with the primary paediatric service of the city of Cordoba health district. The programme aims at decreasing the time that elapses between identifying the first symptoms and the establishment of an ASD diagnosis, as well as reducing the average age of diagnosis, in order to initiate a treatment programme as early as possible. The M-CHAT questionnaire (Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers) was applied to all the cases showing the first signs of ASD. Positive cases were assessed directly by the childhood/adolescent mental health unit in a preferential way and following an assessment protocol especially designed for the purpose. The conclusion of the study is that the MCHAT is a good assessment tool to apply at the first level of early screening of detecting ASD and constitutes the gateway to the mental health assessment process. Its widespread adoption, with an excellent cost/benefit ratio, would have a significant impact on the quality of life of people with autism that would in turn mean a general improvement for their families.
