Resumen

Según definición de la APA el mutismo selectivo (o electivo) es un trastorno de la infancia que se caracteriza por un rechazo persistente o incapacidad para hablar en una o más situaciones sociales, a pesar de conservar, en otras ocasiones, la capacidad para hablar y comprender el lenguaje hablado. Lo más frecuente es que los niños mutistas dejen de hablar en la escuela o en presencia de adultos que no sean de la familia y conserven el habla en presencia de familiares, aunque hay casos en que no se cumplen estas características.
